Describes what participants can expect during the training and discusses the terms that will be discussed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 2: Introduction to Victim Impact\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit introduces many concepts that are essential to understanding the core curriculum: Who is a \"victim\"? What are \"secondary\" victims? What are the core victims' rights? What is a \"ripple effect\"?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 3: Property Crime\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses property crime, the illegal taking or destroying of someone's property or land without threats or force.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 4: Assault\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit provides an overview of aggravated and simple assault as well as the eff­ects of each on victims.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 5: Robbery\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses robbery, the taking or attempting to take anything of value (actual or perceived) from another person by force or threat of force. Robbery is often considered a violent crime because it occurs face to face.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 6: Hate and Bias Crime\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses hate and bias crimes. These crimes are motivated by hostility and prejudice against a person based on his or her race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnicity\/national origin. Most victims are targeted because they represent a particular group rather than because of any personal conflict or problem with the off­ender.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 7: Gang Crime\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses gang crime, which includes, but is not limited to: graff­iti, extortion, drug sales, burglary, home invasion, physical assault, sexual assault, and murder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 8: Sexual Assault\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses sexual assault and includes examples of both physical and nonphysical force. Physical force includes using a weapon, hitting, kicking, choking, or holding someone down. Nonphysical force or \"coercion\" includes verbally threatening a victim into doing something he or she doesn't want to do. Although most reported cases involve women as victims, men also are sexually assaulted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 9: Child Abuse and Neglect\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses the four main types of child maltreatment: physical abuse, child neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. These may occur separately or in combination. Emotional abuse is almost always present when other forms are identified.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 10: Domestic Violence\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses domestic violence, a pattern of coercive behaviors used against an individual's intimate partner. These behaviors may include one or more of the following: physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 11: Drunk and Impaired Driving\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses drunk and impaired driving and its e­ffects on victims. People who drive in a drunk or impaired condition create a major problem in our country today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 12: Homicide\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis unit discusses homicide, defined as murder (killing another person with prior intent to kill that victim or anyone who gets in the way and with no legal excuse or authority) or manslaughter (killing another person without prior intent).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUnit 13: Making Amends\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe primary goal of this curriculum is to prevent further victimization by helping o­ffenders become aware of the impact of crime on victims and communities.
